José and World Central Kitchen Activate in The Bahamas

September, 2019

Earlier this month, Hurricane Dorian slammed into The Bahamas as the largest hurricane in recorded history to hit the Caribbean island chain. In anticipation of the storm, José and World Central Kitchen’s Chef Relief Team arrived in Nassau three days before landfall to prepare for a massive relief effort. As soon as the storm passed – after a storm surge of up to 20 feet on Grand Bahama and Abaco – the team sprang into action. Despite the utter devastation of the northern islands, the team quickly organized logistics to get food to as many people in need as possible, making sandwiches and cooking hot meals in a kitchen on Nassau and using helicopters, seaplanes, and boats to distribute.

The situation in the Bahamas remains challenging. Some communities still don’t have communications, water, or power. While many residents have left Abaco and Grand Bahama – and are being served meals at evacuee shelters throughout Nassau – many others still remain, so the team has continued to cook and deliver meals to community centers, clinics, churches, and into local neighborhoods that have been isolated by the storm.
